Creating interesting online learning activities for students is challenging for most of us, but fortunately there is lots of help available. I’ve been looking at what support and guidance is available for e-learning designers and here’s my summary.

e-Learning pedagogic advice and templates:

  • Best Practice Models for e-Learning: a set of principles for e-Learning applied to a range of tools, subjects and pedagogic approaches with examples
  • The 3E Framework: developed by Napier University, this framework is based on the Enhance-Extend-Empower continuum and includes lots of examples.
  • Community of Inquiry Model: suggests online learning should include teacher presence, cognitive presence and social presence
  • The R2D2 Model: suggests a wide range of online activities that follow the R2D2 model – ‘read,  reflect, display and do’

Online tools to plan and design e-learning:

  • CompendiumLD: this online tool developed by the Open University allows you to create a learning design by dragging and dropping the elements rather like an online mind-map (requires free download)

Integrated tools

  • The ILDE is a tool that integrates a range of other tools to support designers when planning online learning, creating online learning activities, importing online activities into a VLE and sharing and evaluating.
